What the hell is going on out there? Creepy clowns are popping up across the nation, lurking in the woods and college campuses. In true 2016 social media fashion, our best defence so far is the#ifiseeaclownhashtag. I don’t think that’s going to do the trick. Captain Spaulding is still gonna track you down and rip off your face while you try to send that final tweet. While many have tried to tie the clown frenzy to viral marketing for Stephen King’s It reboot or Rob Zombie’s new film 31, I think the clown sightings are tied to Google and its new Daydream VR project.

I know it sounds insane, but stay with me here. A few months back Tesla founder Elon Musk less than subtly suggested that we are living in a simulation. Assume for a moment that is true and then assume for a moment that our greatest collective fears are starting to manifest themselves. There is valid research supporting our fear of clowns and its prevalence throughout society. Virtual reality might offer us a glimpse into a world we think isn’t ours, but perhaps the virtual world is the reality we’ll actually never get to experience. Instead, we are stuck in a simulation where clowns are starting to spread like Agent Smith.

So how does this tie to Google and its Daydream View VR headset? The headset, announced today, is just another entry into a crowded VR market right? The headset will retail for $79 and work with the new Google Pixel phones. Daydream View will have tie-ins to the new Tim Burton film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them as well as to Hulu, HBO and Netflix apps. So where is the connection to clowns? The timing. It’s all about the timing. Clown sightings are on the rise, Google releases a VR headset. I don’t think it’s a coincidence. I think we’re already in the virtual reality world, just as Musk predicted. I think Google is trying to bring us out of it by [ghosts] clowns in the machine.
